Suzanne Morse, a spokeswoman for the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), who does not have any direct knowledge about the exemption, says in a statement to PEOPLE that the organization supports “scientific discovery” while recognizing that “advances in technology must be guided by an ethical understanding of humanity.”
Although Morse “can’t speak to this specific person or the conversations” Maus had with her religious leader, the spokesperson says the organization plans to issue an official AI policy “in the coming weeks.”
“As a faith tradition, we are guided by values that include a belief in pluralism, interdependence, and transformation, with love at the center, and those values have helped to inform our thinking on this issue,” Morse continues. “UUs believe in the inherent worthiness and dignity of all people, and technological developments should serve to promote that goal.”
