PART 1: THE ARRANGED MARRIAGE
“Emmett paid that ruined man to marry his daughter because no one else could stand to look at her.”
The cruel whisper travelled through the Cathedral of Saint Jude as Rosalie Durham entered without a veil.
At twenty-nine, Rosalie was tall, strong, and unwilling to hide. A dark birthmark covered part of her left cheek and neck, while her hair thinned near one temple. Since childhood, people had called her ugly, cursed, and impossible to love—often with encouragement from her own father.
That was why she walked openly beneath the stares of two hundred guests.
Waiting at the altar was Manuel Nelson, heir to a once-respected company destroyed by scandal. His father had died after being falsely accused of embezzlement, the family accounts were frozen, and Manuel’s younger sister had been forced to leave university.
Emmett Durham offered to clear the Nelson family name and pay every debt.
In exchange, Manuel had to marry Rosalie.
During their only private conversation before the wedding, Rosalie had spoken plainly.
“My father says you are desperate.”
“And I was told you hate dishonesty,” Manuel replied.
“They probably told you I’m unbearable.”
“I’ve heard many things,” he said. “I would rather know you before believing them.”
It was not love, but no one had ever spoken to Rosalie without mockery or pity. She accepted because she needed to escape her father’s control.
Her mother, Lorelei, had died twelve years earlier after falling from the veranda of their lake house. Police called it an accident, but Rosalie never believed that.
Afterward, Emmett kept her isolated through paid doctors, powerful medication, and false claims that she was emotionally unstable.
The night before her wedding, Rosalie found a tiny key hidden inside her mother’s sewing box. She believed it opened a locked archive Emmett had guarded for years.
She stitched the key into her wedding corset.
Hours later, two of her father’s men searched her bedroom, demanding to know what she had taken. They found nothing.
During the marriage signing, Emmett placed his hand heavily on her shoulder for the cameras.
Rosalie recoiled so violently that the pen fell from her fingers.
Manuel noticed.
That night at Pinecrest Estate, blood appeared on the back of Rosalie’s dress. She refused to see the physician her father had sent and locked herself inside her room.
Manuel stood outside.
“I won’t come in without permission,” he said. “But I need to know whether you’re injured.”
After a long silence, she opened the door.
The hidden key had pierced the fabric and cut her skin. But when Manuel saw her exposed back, the wound was not what shocked him.
There were old marks around her wrists, pale scars on her ankles, and long lines across her back.
“Who did this?” he asked, kneeling so he would not tower over her.
“My father,” Rosalie whispered. “And the doctors he paid to call it treatment.”
In that instant, Manuel understood.
He had not married the monster society described.
He had married the survivor of a powerful family still trying to destroy her.
Across town, Emmett opened Lorelei’s sewing box and discovered the key was gone.
PART 2: THE HIDDEN PLAN
Manuel cleaned Rosalie’s wound himself, asking permission before every touch.
“No doctor chosen by your father will enter this house again,” he promised.
Rosalie did not fully trust him, but it was the first promise she had heard that did not sound like a threat.
Over the following weeks, their business arrangement slowly changed.
Rosalie reviewed the estate accounts and uncovered fraudulent charges harming the workers. Manuel dismissed the corrupt manager and returned the missing money.
When a dressmaker insulted Rosalie and suggested hiding her beneath dark fabric, Manuel removed the woman immediately—then apologised for acting without Rosalie’s approval and allowed her to choose her own replacement.
It was not love yet.
But it was respect, which felt almost as rare.
Emmett continued trying to control her.
Dr Callaway arrived without warning, claiming Rosalie required an urgent mental evaluation. Manuel turned him away in front of the entire household.
Two days later, Rosalie’s assistant, Naomi, mistakenly drank hot chocolate intended for Rosalie and collapsed.
An independent doctor found a dangerous amount of sedative in the cup.
“It was meant for me,” Rosalie said beside Naomi’s hospital bed.
That night, Rosalie led Manuel to her mother’s private archive room, which Emmett had been legally forced to transfer to Pinecrest.
The key opened a locked chest.
Inside were letters, bank records, and a notebook written in Lorelei’s coded language. Ordinary household words concealed illegal payments. “Candles” meant bribes. “Repairs” referred to money paid to corrupt officials.
Together, Rosalie and Manuel decoded the ledger.
