Have you ever heard the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve”? It means you show your emotions openly for everyone to see. But nature loves a good plot twist! Today, we are going to look at a completely different kind of riddle. What if an animal doesn’t wear its heart on its sleeve, but inside its head?

Which one do you think is the correct answer? Let’s go on a little journey through nature to find out, and learn some amazing facts along the way!
Candidate C: The Mighty Hippo
Let’s start with the biggest contestant on our list. Hippos are absolutely massive creatures. They spend most of their days chilling in lakes and rivers to keep cool under the hot sun. Because they are so large, they need an incredibly strong system to keep their bodies running.
A hippo’s heart is right where you would expect it to be—deep inside its massive chest! In fact, a hippo’s heart can weigh up to 15 kilograms (about 33 pounds). That is a lot of muscle just to pump blood through their huge bodies. So, it is definitely not the hippo.
Candidate B: The Sleepy Sloth
Next up, we have the sloth. These cute animals are famous for doing everything in slow motion. They live high up in the trees and can sleep for up to 15 to 20 hours a day! Because they move so slowly, their internal organs work differently too.
A sloth’s heart is located in its chest cavity, just like ours. However, because they spend so much time hanging upside down, their organs (like the liver and stomach) are actually anchored to their ribs so they don’t press down on their lungs. Pretty cool, right? But their heart stays firmly in their chest. That means the sloth is not our mystery animal either!
And the Winner Is… A: Shrimps!
