“‘Go by yourself—you’re overreacting!’ my husband shouted as I begged him to stay while I was in labor with our baby. Instead, he drove away to celebrate his mother’s birthday. I delivered our son without him beside me. Two days later, he entered my hospital room expecting to be forgiven… but one glance around left him pale, silent, and regretting the moment he abandoned us. What followed changed every one of our lives forever.
My name is Sarah Mitchell, and the worst day of my life started in a hospital maternity ward.
I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant with our first child when contractions began shortly after sunrise. My husband, Brandon Mitchell, drove me to the hospital, but rather than comforting me, he complained the entire way that my labor had disrupted his mother’s birthday celebration.
“Can’t this wait a few hours?” he muttered while checking his phone.
I assumed he was joking.
He wasn’t.
When a nurse confirmed that I was in active labor, Brandon released an exaggerated sigh.
“My mom has been planning this dinner for weeks.”
Another contraction struck, and I grabbed his hand.
“Please… don’t leave me.”
He pulled away.
“Sarah, you’re overreacting. Women give birth every day.”
The nurse stared at him in disbelief.
“Sir, your wife is progressing quickly. She needs support.”
Brandon shrugged.
“My mother only turns sixty once.”
I could hardly process what he was saying.
Tears ran down my cheeks.
“This is your child.”
He picked up his car keys.
“I’ll be back tonight.”
“No,” I begged. “Please stay.”
He looked at me with annoyance.
“Go have the baby. I’ll meet him later.”
Then he walked out of the delivery room without looking back.
The nurse gently squeezed my shoulder.
“You won’t be alone.”
She immediately contacted the person listed as my emergency contact.
Less than thirty minutes later, my father, Robert Hayes, and my younger sister, Emma, rushed into the hospital.
Dad wrapped his arms around me.
“I’ve got you.”
For the next six exhausting hours, neither of them left.
When the pain became unbearable, Dad waited just outside while Emma held my hand through every contraction.
At 7:42 that evening, my son was born.
The moment Noah was placed in my arms, every second of pain suddenly seemed worthwhile.
But Brandon never called.
He never texted.
He did not even ask whether his son had arrived safely.
Two days later, as I prepared to leave the hospital, the door slowly opened.
Brandon entered carrying a small bouquet and wearing an uncertain smile.
“Hey,” he said softly. “Congratulations.”
Before I could respond, he glanced around the room.
His smile vanished.
My father stood beside Noah’s bassinet with two attorneys and a stack of legal documents.
Robert looked directly at Brandon.
“We’ve been waiting for you.”
## Part 2
Brandon remained frozen in the doorway.
His gaze moved from my father to the attorneys and finally to Noah, sleeping peacefully in the bassinet.
“What is all this?” he asked nervously.
Dad stayed calm.
“Sit down.”
Brandon gave an awkward laugh.
“Come on, Robert. This is a hospital.”
One attorney opened a leather folder.
“Mr. Mitchell, we’re here at Mrs. Mitchell’s request.”
Brandon turned to me.
“Sarah… what’s going on?”
I took a slow breath.
“For nine months, I made excuses for you.”
He frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“You missed doctor’s appointments.”
His eyes dropped.
“You skipped parenting classes.”
