Major U.S. City Bans Sale of Foie Gras in Restaurants, Citing Animal Welfare and Sustainability

“Portland has a famous and innovative food scene, and I’m proud that Portland is now joining a growing list of cities in recognizing that cruelty has no place on our menu, so I want that to be the takeaway,” he said of the ordinance. “Just like it has in New York City and the state of California, our food scene will continue to thrive.”

The council’s website noted that similar bans have been passed in California, Brookline, Mass. and Pittsburgh, Pa., as well as in 28 countries worldwide.

Violators of the ban will be subject to a written warning, then civil penalties.

In the frequently asked questions section of the ordinance, the council noted that the ordinance does not affect the sale of “liver that isn’t force fed.” It also noted that the ban doesn’t affect online sales from outside of Portland.

According to KATU, Portland City Councilor Olivia Clark said that the ban was a “slap in the face” to restaurants “that have helped us through difficult times, that have helped put us on the map as a culinary destination.”

The outlet reported that other councilors supported the ban.

“We will all be okay without this additional delicacy,” Councilor Angelita Morillo said, per the outlet. “There are many delicious and wonderful things to eat in this world that do not include having to force-feed an animal.”
