About forty minutes later, his phone vibrated. It was a message from his mother.
The operation had gone well.
His grandmother would have to stay in the hospital for a few days, but she was stable.
Dani read the message twice.
Then he suddenly let out a breath, as if he had been breathing halfway all afternoon.
“Okay,” he said.
Just that.
A little while later, his mother came to pick him up. She looked exhausted and was still wearing her work clothes. She barely said anything. She just hugged him tightly, as if she needed to hold onto him after an entire day of being unable to do so.
Dani put on his backpack.
Before leaving, he turned around.
“Mr. Miguel…”
“Yes?”
