when I understood that he wasn’t only afraid for his grandmother.
He was afraid of that first afternoon when he would get off at his stop and she wouldn’t be there waiting for him.
To an adult, that might seem like a small thing.
To a child, it isn’t.
To a child, that can be the whole world.
“I didn’t want to get off,” he said after a while. “If I got off and she wasn’t there, then it would be real.”
I had to swallow hard.
There are some thoughts a child shouldn’t have to carry so young.
But sometimes life doesn’t wait until you’re ready.
“Then you did the right thing by staying on the bus,” I told him.
He frowned slightly.
“Really?”
“Yes. In the morning, you asked for help when you were scared. And in the afternoon, you stayed somewhere you felt safe. That was the right thing to do, too.”
I think that was what he needed to hear.
Not that he had been brave.
