Last Monday, a little boy stayed seated on my bus even after we had reached his stop. And when I understood why, I felt a knot in my throat.

“Thank you for not making me get off.”

I simply nodded.

Because if I said anything else, my voice would have broken.

That night, when I got home, I kept thinking about him.

People talk a lot about children these days. That they’re fragile. That they get distracted by everything. That they can’t handle anything.

But that day, I saw something different.

I saw a child call emergency services when he was afraid.

I saw a kid make it through an entire day without making a fuss, simply trying not to be a burden to anyone.

And I saw something many adults forget.

Sometimes a person doesn’t need advice.

They don’t need big speeches.

They don’t need someone to fix their life in five minutes.

Sometimes they just need someone who won’t force them to get off before they’re ready.

Three days later, I stopped at the same bus stop again… and this time, I was the one who wasn’t prepared.

Wednesday came with rain again.
