Last Monday, a little boy stayed seated on my bus even after we had reached his stop. And when I understood why, I felt a knot in my throat.

Then he looked up for a moment, as if he needed to know whether he had done the right thing.

“Of course you did. You did the right thing.”

He nodded.

“They took her to the hospital.”

“Who normally picks you up in the afternoon?”

“My grandma.”

“And today?”

He shrugged.

“My mom is with her.”

“What about your dad?”

“He’s working. He couldn’t leave.”

I leaned against the seat and looked at him more carefully.

“And for this afternoon? Had you talked about what you were going to do?”

He stayed quiet for a moment.
