still had several stops left. I couldn’t make a scene in front of everyone. I thought maybe he was going to a friend’s house that day. It happens sometimes. It shouldn’t, but it does.
I closed the doors and kept driving.
When I finished the route, the bus was empty.
Completely empty.
Well… almost.
Dani was still sitting in the same seat.
I pulled into the depot, turned off the engine, and turned toward him. Without the noise of the bus running, the silence felt heavier.
“What’s wrong, Dani?”
He stared at his shoes.
“My grandma fell this morning.”
I didn’t say anything.
Sometimes, when a child is about to talk, the best thing you can do is not rush them.
“In the kitchen,” he continued. “I was already dressed for school. I heard the noise. Then she called me.”
He said it very calmly.
Too calmly for an eleven-year-old.
“I called 112.”
