Then he said softly:
“My mom texted me to wait at school. But I had already gotten on the bus.”
Then he said a sentence I still haven’t been able to forget.
“I didn’t know where to go.”
Eleven years old.
And he said it without crying. Without making a scene. As if he were saying something completely normal.
I didn’t know where to go.
I had him get off the bus and took him to the break room at the depot. A table, four chairs, a coffee maker, a vending machine filled with chips, cookies, and lukewarm drinks.
I got him some juice and crackers.
He thanked me in a way that broke my heart. As if he didn’t want to be a burden, not even on a day like that.
We sat there together.
Outside, there was a light drizzle.
