Dog Slaughterhouse Shut Down, Saving 9 Pets, Ahead of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival

A dog slaughterhouse has been permanently closed ahead of the infamous Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

The longstanding slaughterhouse in Yulin, Guangxi province, China, has been shuttered permanently after its owner agreed to a legally binding deal with Vshine Animal Protection Association, with financial support from longtime partner Human World for Animals, the organizations announced on June 8. The massive win for animal rights groups comes days ahead of the city’s annual Dog Meat Festival, which was first hosted in 2010.

The slaughterhouse’s owner, referred to under the pseudonym Mr. Huang, expressed a certain relief at closing the business permanently. He said the industry is shrinking rapidly, and he’s had ethical qualms about his line of work.
