Joints can make noises without anything being wrong.
Occasional painless cracking or popping is extremely common.
However, grinding or scraping sensations—sometimes called **crepitus**—can occur when cartilage and other joint structures change, particularly in osteoarthritis. NIAMS notes that people with knee osteoarthritis may hear grinding or scraping sounds during movement.
Joint noise becomes more meaningful when it appears together with:
* Pain
* Swelling
* Stiffness
* Loss of movement
Noise alone is not enough to diagnose arthritis.
## 5. Reduced Range of Motion
Arthritis can make a joint harder to move through its normal range.
You might notice difficulty:
* Bending your knee
* Making a fist
* Raising your arm
* Turning your neck
* Climbing stairs
* Opening jars
* Getting out of a chair
Reduced range of motion is one of the common features of arthritis and may result from pain, swelling, joint changes, or surrounding muscle tightness.
If movement is becoming progressively more limited, it is worth getting assessed.
