Some forms of arthritis cause inflammation inside or around a joint.
You may notice:
* Puffiness
* Tenderness
* Warmth
* Redness
* A sensation of fluid around the joint
These features are particularly common in inflammatory forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis.
The Arthritis Foundation recommends discussing swelling with a healthcare professional when it persists for several days or repeatedly returns.
## 3. Morning Stiffness That Lasts Longer Than Expected
A little stiffness after waking up can happen to almost anyone.
What matters is how long it lasts.
With osteoarthritis, morning stiffness often improves within about 30 minutes. With rheumatoid arthritis, it commonly lasts longer—often 30 minutes or more—and can also appear after prolonged periods of rest.
If you regularly need a long time to “loosen up” after waking or sitting, mention it during a medical evaluation.
