“They are very useful for tracking vehicle movements across multiple lanes,” explains Mr. Sabastian. “Studies show that image recognition systems can reduce traffic congestion by up to 20 percent.”
But they also have drawbacks, CDOT says. “The biggest problem is that the glass can get dirty or create reflections, just like our eyes,” they add. “Sunrises and sunsets can also blind the camera for a few minutes, causing short-term performance issues.”
Radar detection
Radar detection works similarly to cameras, but uses radio waves to detect approaching vehicles. This can be an advantage over video cameras because it does not operate in the visible light spectrum, CDOT explains.
As Mr. Sabastian explains, radar is also effective at detecting faster vehicles, which is why they are often seen at high-speed intersections and highway on-ramp locations.
