The three most common types of sensors are inductive loop, camera, and radar. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and their placement depends on the type of road surface, the region’s climate, and the financial resources of the city or state.
Inductive loop sensor
Inductive loop sensors are embedded in or beneath the road surface and use changes in magnetic fields to detect vehicles. A coiled wire carries an electrical charge that changes voltage when a large piece of metal comes within range.
