Some people simply have difficulty maintaining boundaries when opportunities arise.
Being in a happy relationship doesn’t automatically give someone strong self-control. A person may know that cheating could hurt their partner and still make a selfish decision in the moment.
4. They want something different—not necessarily something better
Sometimes a person becomes curious about what life with another person might be like.
That doesn’t necessarily mean their current partner is inadequate. It can be driven by curiosity, fantasy, or the desire to experience something outside the routine of their relationship.
5. They compartmentalize their behavior
Some people are surprisingly good at separating their actions from their feelings.
They may genuinely love their partner while simultaneously telling themselves that an affair is “just physical” or that it doesn’t change how they feel about their relationship.
That doesn’t make the betrayal harmless—but it can help explain why someone can appear happy at home while behaving differently elsewhere.
6. Opportunity can play a major role
