Luca went pale.
Philippe recovered first. “My dear woman,” he said in English, laughing too loudly. “You speak French.”
I remained in French. “I was curious how far two guests would go when they believed their host was too ignorant to understand their contempt.”
Hélène straightened. “You misunderstood.”
“Do not insult my intelligence twice in five minutes.”
Then I translated everything for Claire.
Simple. Limited. Unrefined. A burden. No cultural foundation.
With every phrase, my daughter’s expression hardened.
Luca slammed both palms against the table. “I told you to stop.”
Philippe’s polite mask vanished. “You know nothing about our family,” he snapped at me. “You are an American schoolteacher from a provincial town.”
I looked at him. Really looked. The signet ring. The twitch in his left eyebrow. The name Beaumont.
And suddenly an old memory opened. Lyon. Rain beating against archive windows. A thick bankruptcy file. Marchand Textile Group. A handwritten authorization initialed P.E.M.
My heart began pounding.
“Your full name is Philippe Etienne Beaumont, isn’t it?”
His face changed.
