I smiled at her. “Everything is fine.”

Then Philippe made his final mistake.

“I only hope Luca understands what he is taking on. A wife without cultural foundation becomes a burden.”

Luca stiffened. “Enough.”

Philippe continued. “And if there are children, they should know where they truly come from.”

“Meaning?” Luca asked coldly.

“Brussels. Our family. Their heritage.”

Something inside me became completely still. I looked at Claire.

They had mistaken generosity for weakness. They had mistaken silence for ignorance. And I knew those mistakes intimately because Richard had made them for decades.

Very slowly, I placed my fork beside my plate. The click against the china seemed to silence the whole room.

Then I looked at Philippe and spoke in fluent French.

“If you believe my daughter lacks refinement, Philippe, perhaps it is because she was raised to measure worth by character rather than by the fraudulent pedigree of dinner guests.”

Philippe froze. Hélène’s wineglass stopped halfway to her lips.

Claire stared at me. “Mom?”
