A fatigue that doesn’t go away with rest
It’s not the fatigue of a long day. It’s something heavier, a weariness that clings even after a good night’s sleep. Morning walks become less frequent, and the sofa becomes the domain of an entire afternoon. Physiologically, the heart and lungs function differently with age. But chronic fatigue can also signal anemia or a subtle depressive state.
Isolation plays a significant role. When there are fewer reasons to look forward to something with pleasure, the body follows suit. If your loved one sighs in front of the garden they once tended with passion, it’s not laziness. It’s because the effort now seems like an insurmountable challenge.
Emotional withdrawal and minor memory lapses
This one is perhaps the most difficult to observe. Family dinners become quieter, phone calls less frequent, eyes sometimes seem to wander. This withdrawal can go hand in hand with forgetfulness: words that slip out, questions repeated, memories that become muddled.
These signs deserve attention, but without catastrophizing. Patience is your best tool. If a story is told to you twice, listen to it as if it were the first time. Letting someone find their own words is an act of respect for their dignity.
