Rene Caisse began to see remarkable results with her patients and wanted to make this elixir widely available. In the 1920s, she began working with Dr. Charles Brusch to establish the formula for a herbal mixture similar to the original drink that had been studied in the laboratory.
Rene Caisse and Dr. Brusch began promoting the use of Essiac tea as an effective and affordable alternative cancer treatment. This attracted the attention of the medical industry, which spread rumors about the health risks associated with consuming Essiac tea. Due to this pressure, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) did not approve Essiac tea as a cancer treatment . 3 Even now, the FDA lists Essiac tea as a new drug that is not generally recognized as safe. 4
Despite the negative attention they received from public health agencies, Rene Caisse and Dr. Brusch saw numerous testimonials from patients who used Essiac tea to treat various forms of cancer. In 1938 (long before the internet), Rene Caisse was supported by a petition signed by over 55,000 people, allowing her to continue treating cancer patients after she was accused of practicing medicine without a license. Thousands of patient testimonials led to the popularity of Essiac tea long after Rene Caisse’s death in 1978 at the age of 90. This herbal remedy can now be found in health food stores in France and Canada and is a popular product sold online. 3.5
