My MIL Ordered Me a Dress Four Sizes Too Small for Her Party, Saying, ‘It’s Time for You to Lose Weight’ – Karma Didn’t Take Long to Catch up with Her

Simon’s voice cut across the room.

“Mom. Enough.”

Everything seemed to go quiet.

Clara stared at him.

“I’m trying to help your wife.”

“No. You’re insulting my wife.”

Her cheeks flushed.

“I only want what’s best for you, Simmy.”

Then she looked directly at me.

“My son deserves a more attractive woman.”

Something inside me went completely still.

I looked at Simon.

But suddenly, I didn’t want anyone defending me.

I didn’t want to stand in the middle of somebody else’s anniversary celebration while an entire room debated whether my postpartum body was acceptable.

“I need the restroom.”

Simon reached toward me.

“Jen…”

“I’m fine.”

I wasn’t.

But I desperately needed five minutes alone.

Inside the restroom, I locked myself in a stall and sat on the closed toilet.

I was angry.

At Clara.

At myself for still letting her comments hurt me.

And a little at Simon too.

Because years of telling me to ignore his mother had apparently taught her that she could say absolutely anything and still be welcomed into our lives afterward.

Then the restroom door opened.

Two women walked in talking.

“Did yours fit?”

“Eventually.”

“What does that mean?”

“Clara had the boutique alter the sleeves.”

I stopped breathing.

The other woman gave an uncomfortable laugh.

“Mine too. She said my arms don’t photograph well.”

“You’re joking.”

“I wish I was.”

Their voices faded as they left.

I remained in the stall staring at the door.

My dress wasn’t an isolated incident.

Clara hadn’t simply bought me something inappropriate.

She had been redesigning women.

Changing sizes.

Changing sleeves.

Changing how she thought we should look.

Then I heard Clara scream from somewhere outside.

“Those are mine!”

I rushed out of the restroom.

The private dining room had erupted into chaos.

A server hurried toward the entrance.

Beside the wall was a rolling clothing rack holding three garment bags.

Standing beside it was a woman I didn’t recognize, dressed in a sleek black suit with a boutique badge clipped near her shoulder.

Apparently, Clara had arranged for several women’s dresses to be delivered directly to the restaurant for final fittings before the family photographs.

Simon stood nearby.

Dave looked deeply uncomfortable.

Clara had one hand tightly wrapped around the handle of a garment bag.

The boutique employee spoke calmly.

“Ma’am, please release the garment.”

“I paid for these dresses!”

“You paid deposits.”

“Don’t play games with me.”

Dave frowned.

“Clara, let the woman do her job.”

Clara spun toward him.

“This is our property!”

The boutique coordinator shook her head.

“No. The garments remain boutique property until the clients accept them and the remaining balances are paid.”

Then she added,

“You also disputed the remaining charges after demanding that we deliver the dresses here tonight.”

Dave stared at his wife.

“You did what?”

Clara hesitated.

“There were problems with the orders.”

“Problems you requested,” the woman replied. “We have records of every size change and alteration authorized by you.”

Clara stiffened.

Then she turned toward the restaurant manager.

“Are you seriously going to let this woman leave with thousands of dollars worth of clothing I paid for?”

The manager remained calm.

“She has documentation showing the garments belong to the boutique.”

Clara tightened her grip.

“Nobody is taking them.”

The coordinator reached toward the garment bag.

“Ma’am, I need you to release it.”

“I said no.”

The restaurant manager stepped forward.

“If you refuse to return property belonging to the boutique, I will have to contact the police.”

Clara stared at him.

“Go ahead.”

So he did.

Twenty minutes later, two police officers entered the dining room.

By then, almost every guest had given up pretending they weren’t watching.

Clara immediately approached them.

“She’s trying to remove property I paid for.”

One officer looked toward the boutique coordinator.

“Ma’am?”

The woman handed him a folder.

While the officers reviewed the paperwork, Simon came over to me.

“Jen.”

“What is happening?”

He glanced toward his mother.

“The manager called the police because Mom refused to let the boutique take the dresses.”

“Because of the dresses?”

“Yes. But there’s something else.”

Before he could explain, one of the officers looked across the room.

“Is Jennifer here?”

Every head turned.

I stepped forward.

“That’s me.”

The officer gave me a reassuring expression.

“You’re not in any trouble.”

Clara started to speak.

He lifted one hand.

“Ma’am, please.”

Then he turned back to me.

“We were called regarding a dispute involving several garments from tonight’s event. The vendor has provided documentation showing that the disputed clothing still belongs to the boutique.”

I looked at Clara.

“You’re fighting over dresses that aren’t even yours?”

“They were paid for!”

The officer corrected her.

“Deposits were paid. That does not establish ownership.”

Clara’s face went bright red.

The boutique coordinator added,
