Magnesium Deficiency Could Be Quietly Draining Your Energy, Sleep, Muscles, and Mood — Here’s What to Do

Magnesium is a mineral your body needs every day. It supports normal muscle and nerve function, helps turn food into energy, and plays a role in bone, heart, and electrolyte balance. Many people hear about magnesium for sleep or muscle cramps, but low magnesium can affect the body in several different ways.

A true magnesium deficiency is not always easy to notice at first. Early symptoms can be mild and general, which means they may look like stress, poor sleep, dehydration, or simple tiredness. But if magnesium levels become very low, symptoms can become more serious.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists early magnesium deficiency symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions, cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and low calcium or potassium levels can occur.

1. Fatigue and Weakness

Feeling tired once in a while is normal, especially after poor sleep or a busy day. But ongoing fatigue and weakness may sometimes be linked to low magnesium, especially when it appears with other symptoms like cramps, nausea, or tingling.

MedlinePlus lists fatigue and weakness among symptoms that may lead a doctor to order a magnesium blood test.

2. Muscle Cramps, Spasms, or Twitching

Magnesium helps muscles contract and relax properly. When magnesium is low, some people may notice muscle cramps, spasms, stiffness, or twitching.

This can affect the legs, feet, eyelids, hands, or other muscles. Muscle cramps can have many causes, including dehydration, exercise, medications, nerve problems, or low potassium, so it is best not to assume magnesium is the only reason.

3. Numbness or Tingling
