Person 3 uses a fire extinguisher.
So the question is: Who is the smartest one?
Take a few seconds and choose your answer before reading further.
Many people answer quickly.
Some choose the blanket because it can cover the flames.
Others choose the water because water often puts out fire.
And many choose the extinguisher because it is made for fighting fires.
But let’s look at each option carefully.
Person 1 – The Blanket
Using a blanket can sometimes be a good idea.
If a small pan catches fire in the kitchen, covering it can remove oxygen and stop the flames.
So Person 1 is thinking in a logical way.
That is the good part.
However, this is not a small pan fire.
It is a gas cylinder fire.
To stop this kind of fire, the blanket would need to completely seal the area around the burning gas.
That is very difficult.
If gas is still leaking, the fire may continue burning under or around the blanket.
There is also a danger that the person gets too close to the cylinder.
So this method is partly reasonable, but not the safest or most effective choice.
Person 2 – Pouring Water
This is the option that tricks many people.
We learn from childhood that water puts out fire.
For wood, paper, and many ordinary fires, that is often true.
But gas fires are different.
Pouring water directly on a burning gas cylinder usually does not stop the gas leak.
The flames may continue because the fuel is still coming out.
In some situations, water can help cool the cylinder and reduce the risk of overheating.
Firefighters sometimes use water for cooling from a safe distance.
But simply pouring a bucket of water onto the flame is not the correct way to extinguish a leaking gas fire.
So Person 2 has good intentions, but the method is mostly ineffective for this situation.
Person 3 – The Fire Extinguisher
This looks like the strongest answer.
A fire extinguisher is designed for fighting fires.
For gas fires, the usual recommended extinguishing agents are dry powder extinguishers.
They can interrupt the chemical reaction of the flame and put the fire out.
