My Mother-in-Law Posted a Photo of Me Sick in Bed—Then My Husband Took Me to Her House Before Dawn

I was burning with a 102-degree fever when Patricia used our emergency key and walked into my bedroom without knocking. I could barely sit up, but she photographed me lying beneath the blankets and lectured me about how women of her generation still got up and cared for their husbands, no matter how sick they were.

Ten minutes after she left, my phone buzzed. Patricia had posted the photo on Facebook, showing my tangled hair, swollen eyes, and medicine-covered nightstand. Her caption mocked me for “sleeping until noon.” Almost immediately, her friends began commenting about my laziness and how sorry they felt for my husband, Nathan.

When Nathan came home and saw the post, I expected him to be furious. Instead, he took my hand and told me not to respond to anyone. He simply said, “Trust me.” Three mornings later, before five o’clock, he woke me, handed me my coat, and quietly said, “Honey, it’s time Mom learned a lesson.”

We drove to Patricia’s house and entered with the emergency key. I quickly understood why she had never invited us inside. Dust covered the furniture, dirty dishes filled the sink, laundry crowded the hallway, and sour towels were scattered across the floor.

Nathan switched on the bedroom light. Patricia woke with a start. He held up his phone and said, “Almost five in the morning, Mom. Claire is awake, and you’re still in bed. Imagine what your Facebook friends would say.”
