Last Monday, a little boy stayed seated on my bus even after we had reached his stop. And when I understood why, I felt a knot in my throat.

I was trying to calm her from my seat when I saw in the mirror that Dani was reaching into his backpack.

He pulled out an ordinary blue hair tie and handed it to her.

The little girl took it.

He didn’t say anything.

He simply sat back down.

And I thought that said a lot about a person.

Some people shut themselves away when they’re afraid.

And others, even when they’re scared, still notice the person beside them.

At the end of the day, when we reached his stop, no one was waiting.

I noticed the change in his face even before he looked properly.

He froze in the aisle.

Just for half a second.

But I saw it.

Sometimes half a second is everything.

He looked outside again and tightened his grip on his backpack.

I set the parking brake.
