Josh Brolin’s childhood – actor tells all in autobiography

The death of his mother at just 55 became another turning point. Years later, realizing that he had surpassed the age at which she died forced him to think differently about his own mortality. What once seemed like an unavoidable part of his family history suddenly felt like something he could choose to change.

One of the most painful moments came when Brolin visited his grandmother’s deathbed while struggling with alcohol. Seeing her at 99 brought his behavior into sharper focus. The shame he felt became difficult to ignore, especially as he recognized how much of his life was being consumed by addiction and self-destruction.

His stepmother, Barbra Streisand, also played an important role in confronting him about his drinking. Rather than allowing him to minimize the problem, she openly acknowledged his alcoholism and challenged him to face it honestly. That directness helped break through some of the denial surrounding his behavior.
