He Thought It Was Just an Allergy — But the Itching Told a Different Story
It started with something that seemed harmless.
A persistent itch.
At first, he didn’t think much of it. His arms felt irritated. Small bumps appeared on his skin. The itching became more intense at night. Like many people would, he assumed it was an allergic reaction — perhaps to food, soap, laundry detergent, or even the weather.
He tried antihistamines. He changed his body wash. He applied soothing creams. But nothing worked.
Instead of improving, the itching spread.
When “Just an Allergy” Doesn’t Go Away
Allergies are common. They can cause redness, swelling, hives, and itching. Usually, symptoms improve once the trigger is removed or with basic treatment.
But in his case, the symptoms continued for weeks.
The bumps became more noticeable. They appeared in clusters along his wrists, elbows, and between his fingers. The itching was worse at night — so intense that it disrupted his sleep.
That’s when he decided to see a doctor.
The Real Diagnosis
After a physical examination, the doctor delivered unexpected news: it wasn’t an allergy at all.
He was diagnosed with scabies, a contagious skin condition caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the upper layer of the skin.
Scabies spreads through close skin-to-skin contact and sometimes through shared bedding, clothing, or towels. The mites create tiny tunnels under the skin, triggering an intense allergic reaction — which is what causes the severe itching and rash.
Because the symptoms can look similar to eczema or allergic dermatitis, scabies is often misdiagnosed at first.
Why It’s Often Confused With Allergies
Several factors make scabies easy to mistake for a simple allergic reaction:
-
Small red or skin-colored bumps
-
Intense itching
-
Rash that appears suddenly
-
Skin irritation that worsens at night
However, there are key differences:
-
The itching from scabies is typically more severe at night.
-
The rash often appears in specific areas like wrists, elbows, waistline, armpits, and between fingers.
-
Other household members may begin to itch as well.
