This tool changed that. Its wooden handle and metal jaws rolled the liner’s edge into a smooth, protective lip, faster and more reliably than tired fingers ever could. Used after every milking, as liners were removed and boiled clean, it quietly guarded udders from injury. Then, after World War II, factories began molding liners perfectly from the start. The expander’s task vanished overnight. Most were thrown away, leaving only a few survivors to puzzle future generations.
