Eleanor looked at it.
“Can we build sandcastles tomorrow?”
Eleanor covered her mouth for a moment.
Then she smiled through her tears.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
She opened her arms.
“As many as you want.”
Lily stepped forward.
Then Leo did too.
Behind them, Julian stood completely alone.
His father looked at him.
“You need to leave.”
Julian stared at him.
“Dad—”
“Tonight.”
Nobody defended him.
Six months later, our divorce was finalized.
The letters, messages, and other records made it impossible for Julian to continue pretending there had simply been a misunderstanding.
I received primary custody of Lily and Leo.
More importantly, the children finally had the opportunity to build relationships with the relatives they had spent years believing wanted nothing to do with them.
Julian’s relationship with his family never recovered.
His parents were furious that he had spent more than a decade manipulating both sides simply so he could control when and how everyone interacted.
He eventually left the family business and moved into a small apartment in the city.

Down by the water, Leo was laughing with his grandfather while they set up a volleyball net.
A few yards away, Eleanor sat in the sand beside Lily.

A crooked little moat.

I watched her pick it up.
