A boy called 911 about his math homework: the police arrived and discovered the real emergency. onJune 17, 2026

“Wait… wait…” The operator kept him on the line while she quickly found his address. A few minutes later, the police rushed to his home and only found him at 10 p.m.

“Hello Ryan. Where is your mother? How long have you been home alone?” an officer asked calmly.

Ryan explained that he had returned home from school that afternoon and found the house empty. “I had the spare keys with me,” he said.

The police immediately sensed that something was wrong. They tried to contact Ryan’s mother, Matilda, but her phone was switched off.

“There’s something wrong… Officer, stay with him while we search him,” the policeman ordered his colleague.

A few moments later, a call came in from the control room with the last known location of Matilda’s phone.

“What… What’s happening? Where’s my mother?” Ryan cried.

One officer stayed with the boy while the others rushed to the scene in a patrol car.

The coordinates led them to the outskirts of the city. “His phone was last activated in this area… Go ahead, search the place,” ordered an officer, pointing to an isolated area where an old abandoned mill stood.

They searched the area thoroughly, but for half an hour they found nothing. Shortly after, a dog unit arrived as backup. The officers gave Caesar, the police dog, a used scarf belonging to Matilda, taken from her home, for him to sniff.

In a few seconds, Caesar had them change direction. Ten minutes later, they found a broken-down car in the middle of a deserted street.

“Officers, back off… stay alert…” the officer warned. As they cautiously approached the vehicle and surrounded it, they glanced inside and saw Matilda motionless in her seat.

“We have to get her out of there!” shouted the officer.

Ten minutes later, an ambulance arrived and Matilda was rushed to the hospital.

“Mrs. Crosby? Are you all right?” the police officer asked her as soon as she regained consciousness. “Can you tell us what happened, please?”

Matilda revealed that she had gone to visit her sister in a nearby town that same morning.

“I wanted to do some shopping on the way and decided to take a shortcut to get here,” she explained. “But while driving, I lost consciousness and I don’t remember what happened next.”

The doctor later confirmed that Matilda had lost consciousness due to the heat. Her cell phone battery was dead, and she had remained unconscious in the car all day. Fortunately, a window was open, which allowed her to survive.

The officer explained to Matilda how they had found her. “Apparently, a 911 call made by Ryan saved your life…”

Later, an officer brought Matilda home. As soon as Ryan saw her, he ran to her and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down his cheeks. “Mom! I missed you… Where have you been?” he sobbed.

Matilda hugged her son and kissed him, realizing she had done the right thing by teaching him never to be afraid to call 911 if needed.

“You saved my life!” she said with a grateful smile.

This accident was also an important lesson for Matilda’s friends and siblings. They began teaching their children not to hesitate to call 911 if needed.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Teach your children the importance of calling 911 in an emergency.   Ryan’s mother had always told him to call 911 whenever he needed help. When he dialed 911 for help with his math homework, the call ultimately saved his mother’s life.
  • Pay attention to what children say.   Their words are often more meaningful than they seem. When Ryan told the emergency operator he was alone at night, she immediately alerted the police. Once on the scene and after confirming his mother’s disappearance, the police began the search that ultimately led to her being found.
