Although the emergency department in this area of Madison had dealt with all kinds of calls, this one was unlike any they had ever received.
“What on earth is this? Do you need help with math???” exclaimed the operator after listening to Ryan.
“Yes, of course,” Ryan replied confidently. “My mother always told me not to be afraid to call 911 for help.”
The operator hoped it wasn’t just a prank. Children in the city frequently called 911 to play jokes, especially around Halloween. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, she decided not to take the boy’s pleas about his math homework too seriously.
“Listen, boy… What is your name?” asked the operator.
“My name is Ryan.”
“Ryan, this isn’t a tutoring center… It’s an emergency hotline,” she explained gently. “Is there an emergency we can help you with?”
But Ryan insisted: he just needed help with his math problems. “Please! My mom said 911 could help… Help me, please!” he shouted.
At that moment, the operator considered hanging up, but she had to make sure it wasn’t a prank. She then decided to speak to Ryan’s mother.
“Very well! I’ll transfer your call to the non-life-threatening emergency department. But first, can you pass the phone to your mother?” he asked.
Ryan burst into tears. He said he wouldn’t have called 911 if his mother had been home.
“I understand. Is there another adult with you in the house?” the operator asked.
“No, it’s just me,” Ryan replied.
“You mean you’re completely alone in the house, Ryan?”
“YES.”
