A box has 900 balls. 90% are red.

How many are not red?

Most people will answer immediately.

And honestly, the first answer is usually the correct one.

But before we rush, let’s play with the idea a little and see how different people might think about it.

First, let’s use normal everyday logic.

If 90% of the balls are red, that means 10% are not red.

So we only need to find 10% of 900.

A simple way is to divide 900 by 10.

900 ÷ 10 = 90.

So the usual answer is:

90 balls are not red.

Easy, right?

We can also check it another way.

If 90% are red, then:

900 × 0.90 = 810.

So there are 810 red balls.

Now subtract them from the total:

900 − 810 = 90.

Same result again.

That is why most people confidently choose 90.

And in a normal math class, that would absolutely be the expected answer.

But puzzles become fun when we ask:

“Is there any other way to read the sentence?”

Sometimes the trick is not the math.

Sometimes the trick is the wording.

Look carefully at the sentence:

“90% are red.”

It does not say that the other 10% are blue, green, yellow, or any specific color.

We simply assume they are some other color.

And that assumption is perfectly reasonable.

Now let’s imagine a strange situation.

Suppose someone opens the box and says:

“All 900 balls are red.”

Would that fit the statement?

Not exactly.

If every ball is red, then 100% are red, not 90%.
