We often imagine aging as something obvious, almost spectacular. Yet, it usually creeps in quietly, through the smallest details of everyday life. A half-empty plate, an armchair that’s never left, a silence that lingers a little too long… These signs exist; they speak volumes. The challenge is knowing how to listen to them, and above all, knowing what to do next.
When appetite slowly fades away
The first warning sign often appears at the dinner table. The refrigerator is nearly empty, meals become lighter, and the phrase “I’m not really hungry” is heard more and more frequently. It’s not a lack of willpower: with age, the senses of smell and taste diminish, certain medications suppress appetite, and dental problems can sometimes make eating uncomfortable.
But there’s also a deeply human dimension to it. Cooking for yourself, alone, quickly loses its charm. The best solution? Drop by unexpectedly with something to share, or organize a little cooking session together. Feeding someone is also a way of reminding them that they matter.
