9 Signs of High Cortisol
Persistently high cortisol can occur in Cushing syndrome, most commonly from long-term corticosteroid use or, less often, from hormone-producing tumors. Everyday stress can temporarily raise cortisol, but it does not usually cause the full Cushing syndrome pattern.
1. Central Weight Gain
➟ Fat may accumulate mainly around the abdomen and trunk
➟ Arms and legs may remain relatively thinner
2. Rounder, Fuller Face
➟ The face may become noticeably round and full
➟ This is sometimes called a “moon face”
3. Fat Pad at the Upper Back / Neck
➟ Fat may collect around the upper back and base of the neck
➟ This can occur with prolonged cortisol excess
4. Purple Stretch Marks
➟ Wide reddish-purple stretch marks (striae) may develop
➟ They are commonly seen over the abdomen, thighs, breasts, or upper arms
5. Easy Bruising
➟ The skin may become thin and bruise with relatively minor trauma
➟ Cuts and wounds may also heal more slowly
6. Muscle Weakness
➟ Weakness often affects the thigh and shoulder muscles
