Oral diseases can affect the teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and other mouth tissues. Some are mild and reversible, while others can cause permanent damage or become potentially cancerous if ignored.
1. Dental Caries
➟ Tooth decay occurs when bacteria produce acids that damage enamel and dentin
➟ It may cause sensitivity, pain, or visible cavities
➟ Fluoride, good oral hygiene, and timely dental treatment help prevent progression
2. Gingivitis
➟ Early gum inflammation caused mainly by dental plaque
➟ Gums may become red, swollen, and bleed during brushing
➟ It is usually reversible with proper cleaning and oral hygiene
3. Periodontitis
➟ A more advanced gum disease that damages the supporting bone and attachment around teeth
➟ Can cause gum recession, loose teeth, bad breath, and eventual tooth loss
➟ Requires professional periodontal treatment
4. Aphthous Ulcer
➟ Small, painful mouth ulcer with a white or yellow center and red border
➟ Most heal within 1–2 weeks
➟ Recurrent ulcers may be associated with stress, trauma, or nutritional deficiencies
5. Oral Candidiasis
➟ Caused by overgrowth of Candida yeast
➟ Produces creamy white patches that often wipe away, leaving a red surface
➟ More common after antibiotics, inhaled steroids, denture use, diabetes, or reduced immunity
6. Oral Leukoplakia
➟ A persistent white patch that cannot be scraped off
➟ Tobacco and areca nut use are important risk factors
➟ Some lesions contain precancerous changes and may require biopsy
7. Oral Lichen Planus
➟ An immune-mediated condition that may cause white lace-like streaks, redness, or painful erosions
➟ Commonly affects the inner cheeks, tongue, or gums
➟ Persistent lesions need regular dental follow-up
