You wake up, sit on the edge of the bed, and before you can take your first step, it’s there again — that soft but nagging dizziness, as if the floor were made of rubber or your head just didn’t quite fit with your body.
It’s not vertigo making the room spin. It’s something more subtle and more deceptive: a heavy head, unsteady steps, a feeling of floating.
Many people are told, “It’s normal, it’s just old age.” But as a geriatrician, I’ve seen too many patients improve to accept that explanation as inevitable.
Dizziness and a heavy-headed feeling aren’t an unavoidable part of aging. In most cases, they’re tied to everyday habits that seem harmless but quietly disrupt balance, circulation, and the way the brain interprets movement.
Think of your sense of balance like an orchestra — hydration, breathing, your inner ear, blood pressure, neck muscles. If just one of these elements is out of tune, the whole system loses harmony, and dizziness follows.
Here are two of the most common mistakes I see in consultations, and simple, effective ways to correct them.
Mistake: Going to Bed Right After Dinner
Many older adults eat dinner, watch a bit of TV, and are in bed within 20 minutes. It seems harmless, but it isn’t:
- The stomach keeps working after a meal and needs a significant blood supply for digestion.
- Going to bed too soon redirects circulation toward the abdomen, momentarily reducing blood flow to the brain.
- The result the next morning: a heavy head and unsteadiness upon standing.
I remember a patient, 72 years old, who felt dizzy every morning but was fine the rest of the day. The problem wasn’t the morning at all — it was eating dinner and going straight to bed the night before. Simply waiting two hours between dinner and bedtime drastically reduced his dizzy spells. Sleeping immediately after eating also raises the risk of silent reflux, which can irritate structures near the nerves involved in balance.
