đ§ Which Ball Hits the Ground First? A or B?
Look closely before answeringâthis one is designed to trick your intuition! đ
At first, it seems obvious that both balls should hit the ground at the same time, because both are released at exactly the same moment.
But there is an important difference between them.
â« Ball B â The Straight Drop
When the string holding B is cut, the ball immediately enters free fall. Ignoring air resistance, it accelerates downward at approximately 9.8 m/sÂČ. Objects in free fall accelerate at the same rate regardless of their mass. (Physics Stack Exchange)
â« Ball A â The Spring Changes Everything
Ball A isn’t simply hanging from a string. It is attached to a spring.
When the scissors cut the support, the spring can exert a force on the ball. Because the spring is initially stretched, its tension acts upward, opposing the ball’s downward acceleration.
So A does not initially accelerate downward at the same rate as B.
đŻ THE ANSWER: B HITS THE GROUND FIRST!
B â đ„ FIRST
A â đ„ SECOND
That’s the trick! The two supports may be cut simultaneously, but the forces acting on the balls immediately afterward are not the same.
The spring introduces an additional force, while B is simply in free fall.
đ€Ż Did You Get It?
Most people instinctively choose âBoth at the same time.â
But the spring is the clue!
Were you right? A, B, or BOTH? đ
