‘You actually wore that to my family dinner?’ my husband laughed, loud enough for everyone to hear. The room erupted in awkward chuckles as I stood there, humi:l:iated, clutching the cheap shirt I’d worked overtime to buy. Then he sneered, ‘You’re nothing but a useless wife.’ I swallowed my tears… because he had no idea who my brother really was—or that by sunrise, his entire career would be gone forever.”

“You actually wore that?” my husband, Ethan Carter, laughed the moment I entered his parents’ dining room.

The conversation stopped.

Every face turned toward me.

I glanced down at my beige blouse. It wasn’t designer. The price tag was still hanging from one sleeve because I had rushed home from work and forgotten to remove it.

I had spent most of my last paycheck buying something decent for his family’s annual dinner.

His mother smirked.

His sister whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear,

“I didn’t know thrift stores left the tags on.”

The table erupted in laughter.

I forced a smile, waiting for Ethan to defend me.

Instead, he lifted his wine glass.

“What do you expect? She’s never understood class.”

The laughter grew louder.

For three years, I had supported Ethan while he chased promotions at one of New York’s biggest investment firms.

I worked overtime.

Skipped vacations.

Covered bills whenever his bonuses were delayed.

But standing in that room, none of it mattered.

Ethan wanted everyone to believe I was a burden.

“You’re lucky I married you,” he continued. “Without me, you’d still be invisible.”

My heart broke.

I quietly placed the gift I had brought for his parents on the table and turned toward the door.

“Running away already?” Ethan called after me.

I stopped.

Without turning around, I said,

“One day you’ll regret tonight.”

He laughed again.

“Oh please. And who’s going to make me regret it? Your mysterious family?”

I finally looked back.

“My brother,” I said calmly.

The room exploded with even louder laughter.

“Oh, the mechanic?” Ethan mocked.

I didn’t answer.

Because Ethan had never once asked what my brother actually did after leaving our hometown ten years earlier.

He had simply assumed.

And his assumptions were wrong.

I walked into the cold night, fighting tears.

Before I reached my car, my phone buzzed.

My brother, Daniel Brooks.

“I just landed,” he said. “I’m in New York. I heard what happened.”

“How?”

“There are people who still care about you.”

I stayed silent.

Then Daniel asked,

“Do you want me to stay out of this… or do you want the truth to finally come out?”

I closed my eyes.

After everything that happened that night, I whispered one word.

“Yes.”
