Why do jeans have such small pockets? The explanation
To understand this famous mini-pocket, we have to go back to the 19th century, to the era of the first jeans. Created for workers, these trousers had to be sturdy, practical, and suited to a demanding daily life. It was in this context that the renowned company Levi Strauss & Co. conceived an ingenious detail. At the time, many men used a pocket watch. A precious object… but fragile.
The birth of the “watch pocket”
To protect the watch, the designers added a small, discreet pocket inside the large front pocket. Its purpose? To keep the watch safe and secure, protected from bumps and scratches. It was even called the ” watch pocket .” Simple, practical, and perfectly suited to its time, it quickly became an essential feature of jeans.
Why is she still here today?
Good question! Because let’s be honest: these days, very few people slip a pocket watch into one. And yet, this tiny pocket has survived the decades without disappearing. Why? Because fashion loves iconic details. Even when they’re no longer essential, they become signatures. Removing this little pocket would be a bit like removing the stripes from a Breton shirt… unthinkable!
