What 10 Subtle Signs Might Your Body Send Weeks Before a Stroke?

2. Face Drooping or an Uneven Smile

Face drooping can be subtle at first. One side of the mouth may look lower, one eyelid may droop, or the person’s smile may appear uneven.

A simple check is to ask the person to smile. If one side does not move normally, treat it as an emergency. Do not wait for the face to “go back to normal.”

The American Stroke Association uses B.E. F.A.S.T. to help people remember stroke signs: Balance loss, Eye changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call emergency help.

3. Trouble Speaking or Finding Words

A person may suddenly slur words, speak strangely, use the wrong words, or have trouble finishing a sentence. They may understand what they want to say but cannot get the words out.

Sometimes the person does not realize their speech has changed. Family members may notice first.

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech is a major stroke warning sign.

4. Sudden Confusion

Stroke symptoms are not always physical. Sudden confusion can be a warning sign too. A person may not understand simple questions, may seem disoriented, or may act unusually.
