This Symptom May Be Your Body’s Early Stroke Warning—It Can Appear Up to 90 Days Before

Stroke Warning Signals: They Can Appear Weeks to Months Before the Event

When most people think of a stroke, they imagine sudden, dramatic symptoms like one‑sided weakness or slurred speech that appear out of nowhere. While that does happen and requires immediate medical attention, growing evidence shows that warning signs may appear well before a major stroke occurs — sometimes days, weeks, or even months prior. Recognizing these early signals could give you a crucial opportunity to prevent a devastating brain injury.

🧠 What Is a Stroke?

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked (ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel ruptures (hemorrhagic stroke). Without oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to die — and the longer it goes untreated, the greater the damage.

🔹 Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) — “Mini‑Stroke”

One of the most important early warnings is a transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a ministroke. A TIA produces stroke‑like symptoms that resolve within minutes to hours, yet it signals a serious risk:

  • About 15% of strokes are preceded by a TIA.
  • Many people who have a TIA go on to have a full stroke within weeks or months if no action is taken.

Symptoms of a TIA include:

  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Trouble speaking or understanding
  • Vision problems
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Confusion or headache

Even if symptoms disappear quickly, a TIA is a medical emergency and must be evaluated immediately.
