They laughed when the pregnant woman used her last remaining money to buy an abandoned farmhouse… until they saw the baby being born there!

When Fernando called to give her the news, Dalia didn’t scream or cry. She went out to the patio with Ana in her arms and stood looking at the vegetable garden, the crooked sign, the curve of the road below.

She felt something greater than joy.

He felt silence.

On the other side of town, Valentina’s downfall wasn’t dramatic. It was slow. First, she lost her meat supplier, who preferred to sell where they paid better and bought more. Then the tables started to empty. Some families stopped coming. Shopkeepers began to avoid her on the street. The official report didn’t accuse her of crimes, but the town had already passed judgment.

In October he put his restaurant up for sale.

He posted the advertisement on the same post where Dalia had seen, two years earlier, the leaf of the abandoned ranch.

Nobody showed up.

In November, Valentina moved to another city to live with her sister. Her restaurant was locked up.

As if that weren’t enough, Enrique returned in August with a backpack, a fake tan, and a rehearsed smile. He said he needed time, that he wanted to meet his daughter, that perhaps they could talk.

Dalia greeted him outside, with Ana in her arms.

He let him speak.

When he finished, he replied with the calm of someone who no longer needs to prove anything:

« You can see Ana. I won’t deny you that right. But the marriage ended the morning you left without looking back. And I don’t need anything more from you to know that. »

Enrique did not insist.

The divorce was finalized in September.

By its first full year, Sitio Esperanza had six employees, all local women who needed work. The vegetable garden had tripled in size. There were sixty-four chickens in the coop. Don Benito became the restaurant’s official supplier, and Fernando joined as a minority partner to handle the legal and administrative aspects. Eustaquio continued to arrive every week with new drivers, as if it were his duty to show them around.

Later, a botanist from the state university confirmed something unexpected: the basil from the Sitio Esperanza mountain was a unique variety, unrecorded anywhere else in the state. They could try transplanting it to any other soil, but it lost its flavor. Only there, in that earth that everyone else scorned, did it achieve that impossible aroma.

Dalia didn’t make any announcement about that.

It wasn’t necessary.

Whoever sat down at the table and tasted the first bite understood it without explanation.

Ana grew up amidst the smell of that grass, the noise of the trailers braking on the curve, and Don Benito’s hoarse voice at the corner table, a table that Dalia had marked with a simple plaque: Don Benito’s Table.

Sometimes, on rainy afternoons, Dalia would go out with her daughter in her arms and watch the vegetable garden turn green again under the water. She would think about Valentina’s laughter from the window of that truck. She would think about the paperwork, the hunger, the fear. And then she would look at the crowded classroom, the steaming pots, the line that kept growing on the road.

He never answered anyone again.

He didn’t need it.

Because some people laugh when they see someone starting from scratch. Until they discover, too late, that they were laughing in the wrong place.

And because not all poor land is empty.

Sometimes, I was just waiting for the right person.
