Muscle symptoms are among the most commonly reported concerns with statins. Some people feel aching, soreness, cramps, tenderness, or weakness, often in the legs, shoulders, arms, or back.
This does not always mean the statin is the cause. Muscle pain can also come from exercise, dehydration, low vitamin D, thyroid problems, other medications, or aging. Still, new or unusual muscle symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
NICE notes that the risk of muscle pain linked to statin use is small, and severe muscle problems are extremely rare, but symptoms should still be taken seriously.
2. Rare Severe Muscle Damage
Very rarely, statins can cause serious muscle injury called rhabdomyolysis. This condition can lead to severe muscle pain, weakness, dark urine, and kidney problems.
Mayo Clinic explains that rhabdomyolysis from statins is rare, but it can cause extreme muscle pain, liver damage, kidney failure, and other serious complications.
Seek urgent medical help if you have severe muscle pain, extreme weakness, dark cola-colored urine, fever, or symptoms that feel serious.
