She Returned to Escape the Past. The Past Was Waiting in Her Bed.

All that guilt.

All that self-hatred.

Built on a lie.

Margaret reached weakly toward her.

“I came here because I needed you to forgive me before I died.”

Clara stepped back instantly.

“Forgive you?”

Her voice trembled with disbelief.

“You stole my entire life from me.”

Margaret’s mouth quivered.

“I loved you both.”

“No,” Clara whispered. “You loved control.”

The old woman closed her eyes.

And for the first time ever, she looked defeated.

Truly defeated.

Then she spoke one final sentence.

A sentence so quiet Clara almost missed it.

“There was someone else at the lake that day.”

Clara frowned.

“What?”

Margaret’s eyes opened slowly.

Filled with terror.

“Anna didn’t fall.”

The heart monitor suddenly accelerated.

Margaret grabbed Clara’s wrist with shocking strength.

“She jumped because she was pregnant.”
