None of My 6 Children Came to My 60th Birthday—Then a Police Officer Arrived with a Note That Made My Heart Stop

I only wanted them to show up.

At 8, my phone shut down in my hand. I connected it to the old charger beside the sofa, but although the charging symbol flashed briefly, the phone never turned back on.

I blew out the candles and poured myself a small glass of wine.

At 9, I picked up one of the napkins I had ironed that morning and pressed it against my eyes.

Then someone knocked.

It wasn’t a familiar knock. It was firm and official.

A uniformed police officer stood beneath the porch light.

My knees nearly gave way.

“Mrs. Evelyn Mercer?” he asked.

“Which one?”

He frowned. “I’m sorry?”

“Which of my children?” My voice broke. “Please tell me what happened.”

His expression softened immediately.

“They’re all safe. No one has been injured or arrested.”

I gripped the doorframe. “Then why are you here?”

He held out a folded note.

My name was written across the front in Simon’s handwriting.

Mom, I’m safe, and everyone else is safe. There has been a terrible misunderstanding. Please come with Officer Shaw. I promise I’ll explain everything when you arrive.

Love, Simon.

I read it twice.

“Where is he?”

“He’s finishing something important,” the officer said. “I’m Aaron Shaw. I was asked to take you to the Lakeside Community Center.”

“Why didn’t one of my children come?”

“Your family is across town. I was already leaving an event less than 5 minutes from your neighborhood, so Simon asked me to stop. They tried calling you, but your phone was off.”

“My children were supposed to be here at 5.”

Officer Shaw’s face changed. “Five?”

“Yes. I’ve waited 4 hours.”

“I was told you knew the plans had changed.”

“No one told me anything.”

He looked genuinely troubled. “Then I’m afraid there has been a serious communication mistake.”

I glanced back at the table, the cold food, and the 6 empty chairs.

Part of me wanted to close the door.

Instead, I collected my purse and followed him to his car.

When we entered the community center parking lot, I recognized Graham’s SUV, Colin’s truck, and Rachel’s sedan.

“They’re all here,” I whispered.

Officer Shaw nodded.

Through the glass doors, I could see balloons and strings of lights. When Officer Shaw opened the entrance, several voices shouted at once.

“Surprise!”

The celebration di:ed the moment they saw my face.

Graham lowered his hands. Rachel covered her mouth. Tessa’s smile vanished.

A banner stretched across the wall.

HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY, MOM!

The room was filled with flowers, food, and photographs from our lives together.

It was beautiful.

I was too hurt to care.

“You were all here,” I said.

Graham stepped forward. “Mom, let us explain.”

“I waited 4 hours.”

His face went pale. “Four hours?”

“Dinner was at 5. You told me yourself.”

Rachel turned toward Graham. “Oh, no.”

“What?” I demanded.

Three days earlier, Simon had finally told his siblings that he was attending an important ceremony from 5 until 8 on my birthday. They decided to move dinner from my house to the community center at 8:30 so Simon could join them afterward.

Rachel was supposed to tell me not to cook and that someone would collect me later.
