A coarser grit removes metal more quickly and may help with a noticeably dull edge, while a finer grit is useful for smoothing the cutting surface afterward.
For severely damaged blades, sandpaper may be inefficient and replacement or professional sharpening may be more appropriate.
Step 7: Sharpen Along the Original Bevel
Move the abrasive along the cutting edge while following the blade’s original bevel.
Use consistent strokes and moderate pressure.
Work from one end of the sharpened section toward the other rather than concentrating all your effort in one small location.
The goal is to restore an even cutting edge while removing as little metal as necessary.
Work in a Controlled Direction
Keep your hands positioned so that a slip does not carry your fingers across the sharpened edge.
This is another reason why clamping the blade and using a solid sanding block is preferable to holding everything loosely.
How Much Metal Should You Remove?
Remove only enough material to eliminate the rounded edge and small imperfections.
A few deep nicks do not necessarily have to disappear completely if removing them would require grinding away a large portion of the blade.
If extensive metal removal appears necessary, replacing the blade may be the better option.
Sharpen Both Ends Evenly
A mower blade has cutting sections on opposite ends.
Try to remove a similar amount of material from each side.
This is important because uneven removal can change the blade’s balance.
Why Blade Balance Matters
A lawn mower blade rotates very quickly.
If one side becomes significantly heavier than the other, the imbalance can produce unnecessary vibration.
That vibration can affect mowing comfort and may contribute to premature wear of bearings, blade adapters, or other mower components.
Step 8: Check the Blade Balance
After sharpening, check the blade using a dedicated mower-blade balancer or another method specifically recommended for your equipment.
If one side repeatedly drops lower than the other, that side is heavier.
Remove a very small amount of material from the heavier side and check again.
Continue cautiously until the blade rests evenly.
Do Not Grind the Center Mounting Area to Balance the Blade
If balance correction is necessary, remove a minimal amount of material from the appropriate sharpened area according to recommended sharpening practices.
Avoid altering the blade’s mounting hole or structural center section.
A sharp edge can actually create a new problem if the blade is unbalanced, so this quick check should never be skipped.
