The waiter blinked.
« Sir? »
« Somewhere quieter. »
« Near the back. »
The young man hesitated.
« I can bring clean linens instead… »
« Please, » Alan interrupted.
« Just move her. »
I stared at him.
« Alan? »
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
Melissa rested a hand over his.
« It’s kinder for everyone. »
The waiter silently led me to a tiny table beside the kitchen doors.
Behind me, Melissa raised her champagne glass.
« To my wonderful husband! »
The applause drowned out the sound of my heart breaking.
From my lonely corner, I listened to pots clanging behind the swinging kitchen doors while everyone celebrated without me.
That was when I finally made my decision.
The box waiting in my trunk would not stay there.
I would give Alan his birthday present.
Tonight.
In front of everyone.
A young waiter quietly approached.
« I’m sorry, ma’am. »
« I’m not really supposed to say that. »
« But… »
« …I’m sorry. »
A stranger had shown me more kindness than my own child.
I thanked him, stood slowly, and walked outside.
No one noticed I had left.
Not Alan.
Not Melissa.
Not a single guest.
I opened my trunk and lifted out the box.
I had convinced myself it was only a warning.
Standing alone in that parking lot, I finally admitted the truth.
It was a reckoning.
When I walked back into the dining room, conversations slowly faded.
I carried the box straight to Alan.
« I wanted you to have your birthday gift before I leave. »
« Leave? » he asked with forced surprise.
« The party’s just getting started. »
« I don’t think I belong here anymore. »
Melissa smiled stiffly.
« Open it, honey. »
Alan lifted the lid.
Every drop of color disappeared from his face.
He stared into the box without moving.
Then he shoved his chair backward so violently it scraped across the floor.
« Mom… »
« No. »
« Please… »
« Take it back. »
