“I have to ask you something, and I need you to be honest with me, Dan.”
“Okay.” He sat comfortably, still as relaxed, looking natural. “What is the matter?”
“Mommy’s necklace,” I asked. “The green stone pendant she wore all her life.” The one for which she asked me to bury him.
She blinked. “So what?”
Will’s fiancée was wearing it.
A movement was heard in his eyes. She leaned back and crossed her arms. “It’s not possible. You buried him. »
“I thought so,” I said. “So explain to me how it ended up in the hands of someone else.”
“It’s not possible. You buried him. »
“Maureen, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“His father told me that he bought it from a partner 25 years ago,” I explained. “For $25,000. The man had told him that it was a family heirloom. I stared at her. “He gave me the name of this man.”
“Wait,” Dan was stunned. “Claire’s father?”
“Yes.”
Dan doesn’t say anything. He pursed his lips and looked down at the table. At that moment, he looked less like my brother in his fifties than like the teenager who got into trouble for stupid things.
“He told me the man’s name.”
“He was going to be buried, Maureen,” he said at last, in a low voice. “Mom was going to bury him. He would have disappeared forever. »
“What did you do, Dan?”
“I went to Mom’s room the day before her funeral and traded it in for a replica,” he confessed. “I heard her ask you to bury her with her. I couldn’t believe she wanted him buried. »
He rubbed his face. “I had the necklace assessed. I was told its value, and I said to myself… that it was a waste. That at least one of us had to take advantage of it. »
“Mom never asked you what she wanted,” I replied. “She asked me.”
She did not know what to answer. I let silence express what words could not say.
“I couldn’t believe she wanted to bury him.”
When she finally apologized, it was slowly, without her usual dodges. Without that “but you have to understand” at the end.
