She was a young dancer on the resort’s entertainment team. She had long dark hair, endless energy, and a confidence that made everyone watch her.
Cris watched her too.
At first, I tried not to care. Then I found them whispering beside the towel hut. Stormy stood close enough to touch him. She said something, Cris leaned toward her, and she laughed while placing a hand on his arm.
When Cris noticed me, surprise flashed across his face.
Then caution.
He quickly explained that Stormy was helping him understand the activities schedule.
“I didn’t ask,” I replied.
That afternoon, he disappeared for nearly two hours. When he returned, he said he had been helping with a small resort project.
Cris complained whenever I asked him to carry groceries, yet now he was volunteering during our anniversary vacation.
I wanted to confront him, but our daughter entered the room, excited about dinner. I swallowed my questions.
For the rest of the week, I pretended everything was normal.
I smiled in photographs, admired the ocean, and listened to our daughter talk while suspicion slowly consumed me.
One evening, I saw Cris and Stormy alone beside an outdoor stage, studying something on her phone. She moved closer, and my stomach tightened.
By our final day, I was convinced my marriage might be ending.
Part 2: The Beach Surprise
On our last evening, Cris disappeared again.
Our daughter went downstairs to meet some friends, leaving me alone in the hotel room.
Then I noticed Cris’s suitcase.
It was completely empty.
He had not packed a single thing.
That detail shattered me. I wondered whether he had no intention of returning home with us. Perhaps he had already made plans with Stormy.
For twenty years, I had trusted Cris. I had built my life around the belief that we would face everything together.
Now I could barely breathe.
A knock sounded at the door.
When I opened it, a resort manager stood in the hallway.
“Your husband is waiting for you on the beach,” he said.
His serious expression frightened me.
I asked about my daughter, and he said she was already downstairs and perfectly safe.
He led me through the resort, past the lobby and along a path lined with lanterns. When I demanded an explanation, he smiled.
“You will understand soon.”
We rounded a curve, and I stopped.
The beach had been transformed.
Candles created a glowing path across the sand. White flowers surrounded a wooden platform near the water. Resort employees and several guests stood nearby with their phones ready.
Our daughter waited beside the platform, smiling through tears.
Then I saw Stormy.
She wore a cream-colored dress and stood near the platform with her hands clasped together.
For one terrible second, I believed Cris was about to confirm every fear I had carried all week.
Then he stepped from behind the lanterns.
He was wearing a dark wedding suit.
“Mel,” he said.
I stared at him.
“What is this?”
“The project.”
I glanced toward Stormy. Cris followed my gaze and suddenly understood.
“Oh,” he whispered. “You thought…”
“Yes.”
His face filled with horror.
“No. Absolutely not.”
I demanded an explanation for the gym visits, secret conversations, and unexplained disappearances.
Stormy stepped forward.
“I was teaching him to dance.”
Cris admitted he had taken lessons every morning in a studio beside the gym. He had written the gym notes because he thought they sounded believable.
